I was recently doing some research on different lighting features and what I found is that there are many people that are confused about the different bulbs available. Words like Halogen, Krypton, Xenon, LED, and Incandescent can confuse you if you really do not know what they mean. This article is Part I of a simple guide to help diffuse some of this confusion and help you determine the best lighting for your needs.

Let's talk about your common incandescent light bulb. How does this type of bulb work? The bulb is constructed of tungsten filament. When electricity flows through the filament, the filament heats up and causes it to light up. You may be saying, "Well that seems pretty easy." Ah, but there is a little bit of a catch here. You will find when you go shopping that there are different types of incandescent light bulbs: the standard bulb and the halogen bulb.

Standard incandescent light bulbs are the most popular and the ones most people have in their homes. The bulb is constructed of a tungsten filament. Light is produced by heating the filament until it glows.

The advantages of a standard incandescent bulb are that they are cheaper and easy to find. The disadvantages are tungsten is deposited on the walls of the bulb reducing light output, bulbs do not last due to the short time it takes for the filament to get thinner and break, and more energy is needed to produce light which affects battery life.

The halogen incandescent light bulb is constructed in the same fashion as the standard bulb. The difference is the gases found inside the light bulb. A halogen bulb is constructed of a mixture of halogen gas and an inert gas.

How does halogen gas make a difference in the light bulb? The answer is tungsten recycling. This is where it could start to get very technical but I am going to keep it simple. Basically, the gases found in a halogen light bulb create an environment where the burned tungsten can be re-deposited back on the filament. This recycling process produces a bulb that will last 2 to 3 times longer because the filament does not burn out as quickly. The average life of a halogen bulb is approximately 2,000 - 4,000 hours.

Now, I need to address the inert gases found in halogen bulbs because they too make a difference in your bulb. A halogen bulb can either have argon, krypton, or xenon gas as an inert gas. Depending on which gas is used will determine the efficiency of the bulb. Argon is the cheapest and least efficient because it produces more heat. Krypton is in the middle as far as price and efficiency. Krypton is more expensive and efficient than argon but not as expensive or efficient as xenon. Xenon is the most expensive and efficient but will produce the whitest light with the least amount of heat.

Which type of bulb you decide to buy would depend on many things such as what the bulb will be used for, how much light is needed, or how long you will be using the bulb. I hope this Part I of my light bulb series helped to clear up some of the confusion out there.

It didn't take much to convince me to leave Toronto Canada in the middle of winter and go to Scottsdale Arizona. Little did I know how much that trip would change my outlook on selling.

Many years ago I attended a sales workshop in Arizona. It didn't take much to convince me to leave Toronto Canada in the middle of winter and go to Scottsdale. Little did I know how much that trip would change my outlook on selling.

Let me digress for a moment. Upon arrival at the hotel I was immediately impressed. A beautiful setting, first class service, lovely room, and sun, lots of warm sunshine! The next day, regrettably we were indoors for the first of three days in a meeting room, 17 of us, indoors in Scottsdale. On the breaks many of us would rush to stand outside and enjoy the sun. It was on one of these breaks we were standing at a side entrance to the hotel when a large number of very tall men approached. Now I'm not a tall person. I stand 5'7" first thing in the morning before gravity sets in. Turns out these "giants" were the San Antonio Spurs basketball team in town to play the Phoenix Suns. They were using a side entrance to avoid fans at the front of the hotel. I don't think I came up to the belly button of one of them!

But back to the sales workshop. Our facilitator had a captivating Texan drawl, causing me to listen intently to his stories and tips based on years of experience. The content was terrific, the group really bonded, and the three days evaporated.  Towards the end of the final day I just had to ask a question of our workshop leader who had so impressed all of us. I was about to have one of those "ah huh" moments in life.

I asked "If you could share only one piece of advice on how to be a top sales person what would that be?" I'll never forget as he went into a pensive stance, holding his elbow while putting his forefinger to his lips, "What a tough question." He then paused for maybe a minute or two, it seemed longer.

What he shared was so profound I have added it to my repertoire of sales truisms.  It has shaped my philosophy and behavior ever since. He started by cautioning us that in the sales profession we run the risk of developing egos bigger than the moon. Top sales people think of themselves as super stars and want to be in the spotlight. Confidence he said is a good thing, and recognition at the appropriate time and place is important in fact necessary, but an unchecked ego can do damage. And here it came, he paused and with conviction added, "If there is only one piece of advice I'd ask you remember, it is to always shine the spotlight on your customer. They are the most important person, not you!" The room went silent. Our egos on pause, we reflected hard on what we just heard. 

For some reason my thoughts turned to the Spurs who, two days earlier had walked past us. They play under the spotlight all the time. Fans pay to enjoy their athletic excellence on the court. We want them to be in the spotlight, we want them to succeed, and we want them to play to win.

These good for quick uses like taking a quick look at the fuse box, but require a lot of shaking, turning, or squeezing to make them continue to run. Users usually tire out quickly, so don?t plan to use them for nighttime walks or other long-term applications. On the plus side, you will never be caught without batteries again.

Flashlight Size matters
If you are looking for a light to stow in your car or emergency kit, you will want a small light that still puts out a bright beam. LED flashlights are best for this application, hands down, and manual power lights are great for emergency kits as a backup for when batteries run out. Keep both kinds of light stocked so that you will have a stronger light if you need it. Use the manual light for brief uses, like checking on your child?s skinned knee, and the battery powered light to scan for danger or signal for help.

If you are looking for something good for hunting or camping, you will likely want a more powerful light that will illuminate a good area brightly or present a focused beam on whatever you want to see. These lights work great for signaling at a distance, or even better for late night walks or treks to the toilet hole. LED is, again, hands down the best choice, but only if you can find a professional quality light that presents the features (broad vs. narrow beam) that you need.

All in all, it is almost impossible to beat an LED light for applications ranging from pen lights to LED camping lanterns. How often have you gone to get a flashlight only to find the batteries were dead? Too often I'm sure, and it's very frustrating. Well, a batteryless flashlight may be the perfect answer.

How does a batteryless flashlight work?

Actually, there are a few different models of these types of flashlights. The first is called the shake flashlight. Just as the name implies, you give it a shake and the LED light powers it up. Once it's going, it will stay on for approximately 30 minutes or so.

When the shake flashlight begins to go out, just shake it again. The LED bulbs in these lights are good for 10,000 hours before needing replaced.

One thing to be aware of with these lights is their magnet. A shake flashlight uses a big magnet inside. This magnet can be attracted to anything nearby that is magnetized. You have to keep them away from computers.
