The Rechargeable Flashlight Explained

A torch or a flashlight is a portable device for lighting and generally works with battery cells for power. A rechargeable flashlight generally has a tiny electric light bulb, a pocket for batteries for powering the bulb, a switch for the bulb, and also a parabolic reflector which helps in focusing the light. The pocket for batteries also doubles as a handle for carrying the flashlight.

The rechargeable flashlight is comparatively a new discovery although is has a very simple design. It was invented after the incandescent light bulb as well as the light bulb came into existence.

The word “flashlight” has a comic story behind its naming. When the dry cell was initially invented, the power of the dry cell battery was very minimal. So that the dry cell is not discharged quickly, the flashlight was used discontinuously, and only as long as it was necessary to take a glance of the environment. Thus, we have the word “flashlight”.

Today there are a number of designs for the rechargeable flashlight, like rechargeable acid type flashlights, solar charging type, head lamp type, dry cell flashlights, rechargeable dry cell type, underwater type, LED (Light Emitting Diode) gun light, electromagnet type to name just a few.

The simplest design is the dry cell rechargeable flashlight and is utilized in majority of homes. It has dry cells to charge the electric bulb. When the batteries wear down, the illumination also lessens in these flashlights.

Instead of purchasing a flashlight, which requires replacing the batteries quite often, a better choice is to use rechargeable batteries, which can either be of the dry cell variety or lead acid type.

A few use solar panels for daytime recharging. The electromagnetic variety uses a clockwork method or a knob system. In the clockwork method, a spring arrangement is used to power the rechargeable flashlight and needs to be wound as needed. The knob type system has a mobile coil or magnet which moves when the knob is pressed and charges a capacitor, through which the bulb is powered.

LED type flashlights are the latest designs. Compared to the traditional electric bulb, a LED rechargeable flashlight consumes very little power because LEDs do not produce as much heat as an electric bulb does.
